Default Wrapped exhaust

I'm thinking about wrapping the exhaust on my Slim. I wrapped them on my FLHP and am pleased with the results two years after the fact. I'm looking for opinions here...
Would it look better wrapping over the heat shields, or with them taken off?

Thanks.

Take the shields off I reckon. Slims have the retro styling about them, taking the shields off will thin the look of the exhaust down, that would suit that retro feel imo. Plus side to wrapping the shields is you will never burn yourself on them again

I agree with Ink. In most cases on the slim it would look better to pull the shields if you're going to wrap them.

Thanks for the responses. I'll probably make the decision when I start pulling the pipes.

are you doing it to your stock pipes?
I wanted to do it on my Rush kit which is coated ceramic and got mixed reviews. Apparently certain coatings may cause the metal to crack.

Yup, stock head pipes. I did my FLHP when I went to true duals after the "Y" pipe cracked, on the FLS it's just going to be for looks.

Haven't heard about ceramic pipes having issues. Can you get a set of stock pipes to wrap and keep your ceramics as they are?

Another vote for shields off, otherwise they'll look like Popeye's forearms (too bulky & proportional)...IMO.

Cheap black eBay wrap. About $25. for 50'x2", plenty to do from your "Y" to the exhaust ports if you overlap 1/2" to 1".

I hope my advice isn't unwelcome, but here's a little anyway.
1- Soak the wrap before you start. It will be much easier to work if it's wet.
2- Some kind of rubber gloves. Fubar glass can and will get into your skin. Not terribly painful, but hugely annoying.
3- Wrap from the rear to the front, and make it as tight as possible. Saggy wrap looks really really bad.
4- Some assistance helps a lot, especially if your pipe is all one piece.
5- Don't forget new exhaust gaskets.

Most kits come with stainless zip ties. I did a full revolution of wrap, then put on a zip tie, then wrapped over the zip tie.
Zip ties work just fine, but I bought a pair of safety wire pliers to use instead of zip ties this time.

It's going to stink and steam up a bunch but it will stop after about 1/2 hour.
I assume you're going to leave the muffler unwrapped?
Good luck, have fun and post pics!
