Talked with a few guys that have bars taller than 16", they said the bike handles better in the twisties with their apes. I suspect sport bikes will be changing to running apes in stock form very soon.
I tried out the 12" mini's with 2 1/2" risers on my FXDC. The first time out, I thought I had made a huge mistake going this direction. Within a week, I found that I was really comfortable with them and actually was dragging pegs alot more from being more aggressive.
That said, I'm going back to something a bit lower because I feel like I'm truly hanging from them (regardless of height or angle). I just can't get a comfortable grip that high. I'm always readjusting my grip. So, maybe FatBoy Lo's... (trying the other extreme)

yeah that's it...
a jap bike's bars make them handle better in the curves.
Here's how I feel about my apes (and Im not kidding)
If you took them away from me and told me I could only have low drag bars.. I'd most likely sell my bike and quit riding.
I don't see how a bike can handle better with apes. I will say that with apes it feels easier to get the bike to go where you want it to, using less energy. It hardly takes any pressure on either grip to get the bike to go left or right.
