Default RE-Occuring Problem

Tomorrow will be two weeks since I purchased(new) my 2010 Dyna Super Glide. It now has around 1100 miles on it. I am on my 2nd leaking oil filter!!! The original, which was changed at approx. 300 miles, and the latest which was installed by my dealer. Has anyone else encountered this problem?? I am new to Harley.....does the dealer install the original filter or does it come installed from the factory?? I am a certified atv and motorcycle mechanic. I am thinking that the dealer could have installed the filters too tight. That is my hope at least. The 1000 mile service is due and I will be doing it myself. IF this filter leaks as well, OUCH.....I don't even want to think about what the problem may be!!!! How likely is it that the dealer got a batch of bad filters??? Thanks for any input.

That sucks. Maybe it's like you said, just some bad filters. It's kind of hard to mess up putting on an oil filter. Good luck.

Did you have an oil cooler installed?

Try these from K & N...they come in various sizes, both in black or chrome, and can be tightened and loosened with a socket wrench.

I use those filters but I'm not sure that's the problem. When installing the oil cooler adaptor, it's easy to over or under-tighten it.

It could also be one of the lines from the cooler to the adaptor.

If there's no oil cooler on it, then it's time to start considering other problems. Maybe the MoCo got hold of a bad run of filters. Maybe they're under/over-tightening the filter. Maybe the housing where the filter seats is screwed up. Maybe some nasty got on the filter housing seat and that needs to be looked at.

That hex nut on the end of the K&N filter is for ease of use, not for putting 20 foot-lbs on the filter.

I had a mechanic put a filter on too tight one time and I had to rip the body of the filter apart and take a punch to the filter where it connects to the housing when I went to change it at the next oil change interval. No fun. And it was a total beyatch to get off even then. NEVER over-tighten an oil filter. Bad things can (and usually will) happen.

I would take the filter off and inspect where the it seats to the housing. Maybe some bad casting?

Grendel---No oil cooler brother. This bike is bone stock...except for the passenger setup that I installed this past weekend.

DynaWide--When I take it back to my dealer tomorrow, I am going to request that I be in the back to inspect the mating surface for the filter. Since this is filter #2 in the first 1000 miles....I am looking for a burr that is tearing the o-ring!!

The filter isn't leaking anywhere except the bottom. I inspected it closely to see if it was leaking and running to the bottom of the filter...it isn't.

Smart move. Let the Dealer worry about it. It is, afterall, their job description.

If they balk at letting you go back in the mechanics bay, don't be a PITA. Just inform them of the problem so that a mechanic looks at it instead of a grease monkey. Not that there's anything wrong with grease monkeys, just that they're not mechanics. If they were, well.....

In fact, I might not even ask to go back to inspect the housing, filter, etc. If you do, and you don't find anything, then they can say, "Well, you looked at it yourself and YOU couldn't find anything!" Mister smarty-pants. (they won't say that, but they'll be thinking it)

Just inform them of it and maybe inform them that you're concerned about the safety issue of oil on the ground or on your tire.

Actually, I'm not sure I'd drop the 'safety' bomb on them right away. Act dumb. For me, that's pretty easy. But they're not stupid, they know what oil leaks are all about.

The art of getting things done is, getting want you want from somebody and making them think it was their idea all along.

How much is it leaking?

Any chance it could be residual oil from the change itself?

I worked at a dealer and when we would change filters, we sometimes had complaints of the bike leaving a few drops of oil for a while afterwards. Residual oil gets in every nook and cranny and takes a while to cycle out.

Any possibility that is the issue?
