WE use a parts manual all the time, not just to see how something new is supposed to go back together but to see how the old stuff goes too.

While some of the older parts may no longer be available from H-D, many are still available from V-Twin.

When dealing with a part that has been upgraded from original, when the number is keyed into the computer it automatically defaults to the latest version - i.e. the letter at the end of the part year ( - 74D)

So no worries about a parts book not being useful thirty or forty years later.

While on warranty, I took the bike to the dealer for service. You don't have to, but that was my choice. No longer on warranty, I took it for the 30k and 40k, while I changed the engine oil myself at 25k and 35k.
Like someone said already, for the 5k's the only thing that's required is changing the engine oil and filter.

Default Ownership

Maybe not everyone will agree but I think working on my bike is part of the ownership. I want to change my oil, adjust the clutch, and make sure everything is tight and feels right - to my satisfaction. Plus when it comes to mods. (major engine work excluded) I couldn't imagine saying - hey look what I paid someone else to put on my bike.

Service Manual, Parts Manual, Harbor Freight Lift, Craftsman Tool Set (works for me), and then all the little speciality tools, do-dads, whatcha-call its, that help make the job go a little easier.

My $0.02 - Jimmie

My husband and I had no idea waht we were doing before we started hanging out here on the forum. Now we kick ourselves everytime we look back on how we USED to take our bikes to dealers for services. Even help our friends do save tons on their services now, too.
We no longer have to trust that any service was done the way we asked for it to be done and know our bikes inside and out.
Definietly grab that service manual. We have lucked out because when we didn't have it around, great people around here have sent us links to exactly what we need.
You'll feel better about your bike and yourself in no time. Well worth the effort and the money you save can go toward all the new goodies you'll realize you need along the way.
Good luck!!
