.
The slanted saddlebags look better, but for the same width don't have as much space. My throwovers get full quick as it is. The topbag has a deceptively large amount of room.

Oh yeah you need to relocate your turn signals for pretty much any big throwovers but I could be wrong.
I put my small jacket and a pair of longjohns in it..
It also blocks wind some also

Generally, my throw-over bags hold the heaviest stuff: water, tools & emergency/maintenance items & spares, foul-weather gear & heavier spare clothing, stove + cooking gear, toiletries, maps... They are just slung over the passenger seat and stuffed up against the shocks; there was no need to install guards.
Sissy-bar-mounted T-bag holds: tent, blow-up mattress, lighter spare clothing/layers, pocket camera & tripod, dehydrated food and snacks, head-lamp, pen-light, 1st-aid kit, lighter, TP, large trash-bag, Velcro bungee straps...
Forward of that, a small leather backpack forms a luxurious backrest which I pack with lighter spare clothes, towel, Microfiber cloth...
Behind the T-bag, the sleeping bag (in stuff-sack) jams between the sissy-bar and license-plate. Above that is a 35mm film SLR w/ film in its' own padded bag.
Additionally, I store a small accessory bag containing rain-gear and heated jacket liner. This bag can be easily attached to the main T-bag, if extra space is needed.
You REALLY notice the raised center of gravity, so it's important to keep the heaviest stuff low.
Edit: to add that I have purchased police-style hard-bags (for the rain-proof, lockable storage) & turn-signal relocation hardware, and plan to replace the throw-overs this winter, along with a few other small mods.
