i just bought a 07 fxdb tank on ebay for 71 shipped. im in the stages of stripping the paint off of it. ive already used 3 cans of tal strip and it seems like it hasnt even eatin trough the clear coat yet.... good thing i have all winter for this project.
i bought a WG tank from a forum member. I started to strip the paint off. I worked on it for two days and it seemed the clear coat was only coming off. I even let the stripper stay on over night.
The stripper is not cheap. 32oz for $25.00. I didn't want to buy another can of stripper so I decided to have it sand blasted off. I found a guy in my area and got it done for $25.00. He used low pressure and some other kind of catalyst that's less abrasive than sand.
When I got it home I had to do some patching so I sanded the whole tank down. It looks pretty nice.
Yeah, down here at our body shop we use Air Craft Stripper. We also use the stuff in the gallon can that pours out cause the Spray on cans don't seen to work as well. Also, we found it to be more effective if you cover it all with plastic to help stop it from evaporation off...Cover it and let it work for an hour and it should take it right off
DO NOT BEAD BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you wil ruin your tank!!!!!!!!!!! or will be a nightmare to do the body work and glide coat if you do... please do not bead blast the tank... if you blast use 80 grit black sand or alum oxide
get aircraft stripper in the can not the spray. works 1000% better! will take it right off any auto parts store will have it but it can not be really cold out when you use it, the cool weather will deactivete it
in our shop we have a huge dunk tank of b17 it is mean stuff will eat off paint and powder in no time... but that is not somethign everyone has (or wants) in their garage... just get the can of aircraft stripper, pour it on, use a chips paint brush to spread it around (wear gloves and goggles) and it will go to work
Yep, The aircraft stripper brush on works best. Can stuff is garbage. WEAR GLOVES AND FACE SHIELD when working this stuff. I will also add that my painter had reaction issues even though I had scrubbed the tank with thinner and alcohol. It was in the metal and we ended up stripping the tank again and repainting. I would send it to Joe and have him strip it. Harley paint is crazy thick.
I believe soda blasting is safer on metals than bead, and sand.. and works great, only problem with it is that there arent too many people doing soda blasting.
