Default Lucky Break!

Some of you may have thrown in your 2 cents on my 100/100 build thread. I was contemplating head work and where i should get it done. Through a friend i lucked into a 2nd hand set of Tman stage 3 heads, Weisco 103" 10.5(ish):1 pistons, and matching honed cylinders. Im getting them from a service man at HD in Lima, OH who was going to a JIMs motor (ah, the addiction grows). The lot has 1500mi on it and i got it for 1000 bucks! Now i need to get the $700 crank though. But still. So now my barely braggable 100/100 build has blown into a front wheel lifting monster with oh so many possibilities.
Anyway the moral of the story is i want to hear from you guys what IYHO would make this setup scream. Dont hold anything back, exhaust, cams, oil cooler, gears, clutch i want to hear it all! Save the wheelie bars though, she still has to be streetable.
Let the games begin!!!!

I'm not so sure that qualifies as a "lucky break" IMHO Seems kinda steep for what you got.

When you start the big HP & TQ motors. Find you someone that will weld, true & balance the bottom end of the motor. That way the crank won't sissor on ya and tear up your bottomend. There is a shop in N.J. & Wis. That specializes in this. The one in Wis. is Hoban Bros. They are on the internet. This is a wise investment for high output motors.

I've been wanting an UltraCool for my bike, but they aren't made yet for the Dyna. I emailed them a few weeks ago (twice) asking when they would be available and am still waiting for a reply.

From my reading on this site, that is the norm for this company....Poor communication.

I'm looking into using a separate fan kit with a Jagg cooler, but might wait until late spring to make my decision. That should give UltraCool enough time to market the product that they claimed would be available a month or so ago.

Okay ... another option would be to just replace the pistons with Wiseco, CP or even SE high compression pistons for a 95" motor ... the difference is the placement of the wrist pin in the piston (relative to the crown height; because the connecting rod geometry of the 'stroker' 96"/103" is different from the 88"/95" motor) ... the pistons you got (103) would not be compatible with your 2005 FXDXI 88" stock motor ....

With that combination, I think you're still a pretty good candidate for the 100/100 club ... and the relative cost of the pistons (~$200 - ~300) will be significantly less than the crank ... and a lot less work (either yours or someone else paid) to split the cases and replace the crank ....

I would think that your project could be done by you within a 48 hr period (i.e., two full days in the garage) if you have everything ready to go .... I did my big bore over two days time ....

IMHO, your '05 motor is 'strong enough' and durable enough to 'handle' the mods you are contemplating ... but, don't take it from me ... I don't race and build my own race bikes like everyone else who's posting their advice .... ( )

Although I would hesitate to call what you got a screamin' deal, it does not seem like a particularly onerous or unfair price ....

that would work too... if you are not going to have the crank trued and welded though you will at least want to check the run out, if you are going for a 100/100 i would say def have it welded... then again i beat on my bike when i ride it so i guess alot depends on how you ride

Definitely agree to check run out if going with gear drive conversion cams ....

Have not seen or heard much about catastrophic crankshaft failures on 100/100 motors; but, according to Ben Franklin 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' ....

Joe ... have seen you make that statement above from time to time ... I almost always immediately begin a mental rendition of the Ramones "Beat on the Brat" ... beat on the brat ... beat on the brat, with a baseball bat ... oh yeah ....

I did my 02 wg top end, cams, se camplate and pump, jugs and cyls, heads and inner cam bearings, and re-jet in 8 hrs, by myself and I'd only pulled a harley down once before in 71. The labor times must be for a mech who spends half of his time drinking coffee. I was surprised it went so easy. 10k later and still no runs, drips, errors. Labor times are way too high I think
