just a question. I'd like to have a gps for longer trips and would have to go cheap. My question is just how water proof or water resistant are gps devices which aren't purpose made for a bike like the Zumo is
They're not waterproof or water resistant. They make products, such as the RAM Aqua Box that would serve to waterproof your setup. I considered purchasing one, however I've ridden in rain several times and since I use a windshield or fairing, there really is no water to speak of when riding. When I stop, I remove the unit from my bars for security reasons so again no need. That's just been my experience so far.
I think if you wanted to ride in the rain with out the protection of a shield or fairing, you'd definitely want a waterproof model, or at the very least a RAM Aqua Box.

Seems to me the shock and vibration factor would be an issue with units not designed specifically for motorcycles,I would appreciate the input from those who have used the automotive models.I have a Nuvi 1450lmt in my truck and really like the big 5 inch screen plus I have downloaded several different voices and vehicles into it.Works great.

I'm tellin ya bud here's my setup and there is no problem with vibes and whatnot.
Absolutely. Thats exactly what I do. Also, mine is years old and goes back and forth from my car to my bike. Cars vibrate and bounce as well. If these weren't tough units they would blow out at every set of railroad tracks. And mine is the cheapest Tom Tom made. My wife even put it on wrong once after programing it, and it fell off going 50 miles an hour. It dragged and bounced till I was able to grab the cord and pull it back up. Still worked fine. I have since bought a dedicated cord for the bike and rerouted it so even if she did that again, it would just hang floppin, not hit the pavement.
I had a Nextar. It died just after I did an IronButt. Even in a baggie, it got pretty wet during a downpour for ~100 miles. It worked all the way home, but the next day, it wouldn't turn on.
I've been looking at the Garmin nuvi 500 & 550. They're both waterproof and not obscenely priced, compared to waterproof motorcycle-specific models.
