I had these on my bike. The last time i took the forks off i didn't put them back on. Hard to keep clean under them, as well as the boots themselves getting dirty too. Sometimes after the boot compressed it would not retrun to full length. I don't know, just the little things to think about.

I got the Custom Chrome brand from J&P. They are made for the 49mm fork. They come in standard length for the SG and SB, and 2" over for the Wide Glide. They fit perfect.
