I am putting on a 09 nighttrain rear rim with the 200 tire. Is there any difference in the pulley spacing in the dyna, softtail, or touring bikes. I am needing a pulley with less spacing to clear the swingarm.
Thanks
I've messed around with different wheels and pulleys, wider tyres and clearances on my old Glide. Nothing as wide as your 200mm, but there are several things we need clearance for, one is that the belt must clear the wider tyre! Another is mechanical clearance of everything else, also belt alignment with the trans pulley.
Does your belt clear the tyre? To check this with the pulley fitted (wheel out of the bike), sight down the edges of the tyre to check you can see the full width of the belt track on the pulley. If you can see the belt track, how much extra do you have spare? That is the most you can move the pulley in towards the wheel. To get it closer you will need to machine the inner face of the pulley (yes, I've done that!), which requires use of a lathe and 4-jaw chuck or face-plate.
If you have very little belt clearance, will the wheel fit into your swingarm, even if you leave out the axle spacers? If it fits, does the rear pulley line up with the trans pulley (use a torch!). If not, you cannot pass GO! If it does, you need to alter your spacers and sort out the brake caliper mountings.
Hopefully someone who has actually done what you are working on will pass by soon. But there is a possibility what you have won't work without other changes. There is no point removing .175 off the pulley if you do not have at least that much belt to tyre clearance.
There is a guy on here that did this with a crossbones rear wheel. He went through the whole process including the mods for spacing. Here is a link to the page. Hope this helps!!
heres a couple of pics of my bike so far. Thanks for the link. I searched for that, remebering I read it. after reading a hundred of links I gave up.
On the right side, After lining up the brake rotor I measured the clearance for the wheel and the stock wheel spacer for the right side. I had to machine the left spacer to 1.625". Wheel is centered in the swing arm.
I have tried softail pulleys on my Dyna and from what I have found the softail has a spacer built into it and dynas generally don't. Nothing a mill can't fix. It may vary by the brand of pulley.
Everthing done, but spreading the fender struts. So far I have gotten the struts spread about a .250" Still need that or more. I also machined the drive pulley .200 I also chopped the fender while it was off. Will post pics in the next day or two.
