Default Dynojet kit Question

Guys: I installed the dynojet kit on my 2001 Dyna (I have seen some posts that are negative about it, but not until after I did it) and the transition between idle and throttle is rough. When on the main jet it runs very well, but backing down on the throttle produces back fires through the carb. There are also smaller backfires through the carb at idle here and there. I have done everything exactly by the directions and the idle jet is stock (except for the mixture screw being backed out 3.5 turns). There are no leaks on intake or exhaust. Is the backfiring a signal of being too rich? Is this solvable by getting the mixture screw right for the idle or am i going to have to play around with the needle? If so, do you simply move a notch at a time?

Backfiring is a sign of it being too lean. I've used the dj kits in the past and never had a problem. Not the best way to do it but the easiest for the average person. Do they give you a tappered needle or do they have you shim the needle?

it was the needle in the kit and appeared tapered. clip on the 4th groove and three washers, if memory serves.
