Ok, I decided that I wanted to look into switching over to an open primary. I have never messed with one but I know a couple of the downsides. I am aware that they eat pants legs, and that a rock to the belt can end your trip. Other than that is there any other drawbacks?
I am looking at them purely for looks, I think they give a harley a hot rod kind of look and I like that. So as long as I have a guard to keep my pants out of the belt and carry a spare belt and tools to change the belt why wouldnt I want to make this change?
I am looking for advice from the guys who have one or have had one. Please enlighten me guys.
All I can contribute is I think they look bada$$! Ones I have looked at have been pricey. I have read several intalls/reviews and the Riviera seems to get the highest marks.
gonna cost you... there not cheap for the newer dynas... i like this one.http://www.techcycle.com/07drive.html.. but its about 2500 clams...
Ultima has one for 05 and below Dynas now.. hopefully soon they will have one for the newer models...
I hope you do it. The only way these things are ever gonna come down in price is if people start installing them. I'm a big fan of them myself and hope to see more in the future.
i would love to have a open primary but they expensive. I dont know much about them cept dont have to worry about oil or whatever. GTP from the horse put a primo rivera on his dyna and he loves it(lol from what i read)

Cons: Cost, eat your pants, boots, etc, belt being exposed so it's easier to break or cut, noise and if the belt snaps more damage to the bike since there isn't a case to minimize the damage to your bike and your leg.
Pros: Looks cooler, no more fluid to deal with and I can't really think of any more pros for it.
So it comes down to if you really want to spend the money on it and deal with the added noise and when it eats your boots, pants or snaps and causes bodily harm or jacks up more parts on the bike.
I ran one for years on my Shovel and loved it. Just wear boots that keep your pant leg snug and you won't eat them up. Most that don't like them have never ran one. I have and loved it. And I never noticed any noise at all from the belt but the clutch was noisier when disengaged.
