I tried to go cheap and it blew up in my face. I let a guy trade me some powder work for duct work. He powder coated my tank and fenders. He didn't powder coat them well. I am going to have it redone but I noticed tonight when he blasted these parts he got into the tank alot. what i cannot tell is if there is supposed to be anykind of coating in there. also what about under the gas cap, bare metal both places. do I need to do something to fix it???
yup i know (sadly) the local yamaha store sold a tank seal kit cheap. just pour in shake for 2 mins drain then repeat with next chemical. then dry for 2 days. dont remember much else but i did that after a tank started rusting put an inline filter on it and did have to change filter for over 30K miles.
I tried a product called Kreem about thirty years ago. It worked well for a while, but there was one little place where gas got between the coating and the tank and everything went downhill from there. The coating started coming off in sheets inside the tank (it would clog the gas line every couple of days). Finally ended up sitting with a bent piece of wire pulling as much of that crap back through the fill hole as I could. For years afterwards it would still peel off.
I am a believer in the barter system, but when it goes bad it needs to be fixed properly.
If it were me, I would make the guy get you a new tank. Getting the powder out of the inside of the tank will be a hassle and probably never be right. Especially if it was done half-*** as it sounds it was.
I would not want that tank on my bike.
well he didnt powder in there, only sand blast. He is blasting all the powder off tomorrow and I am getting the tank boiled and relined. then either the powder pro, or local paint shop is going to re shoot it vivid black. I am just so ready to be done with this crap. I am just going to RIDE from here on!!!!!
man that all has to be masked off... we mask off the tanks completely for chem dip so we do not get it in the tank, and blasting... and coating.... we can make it right bud... IF YOU RELINE IT YOU CAN NOT POWDER IT!!!!!
he is blasting the powder off? then he is a horrible coater that does not cure powder right if it will blast off or he is using a WAY WAY to harsh media bud
heat will make the sealant fail and fall apart inside the tank which will never clean up enough for use without clogging filters
man i am so sorry to hear what happened, coating tins to show quality standards is not for rookies, lot of work and took us some trial and error at first to perfect it and get the results that we do, and even so we have times where we need to start over to get the results we want for our customers
Wow...hope you get it fixed right 2nd time, but I'd steer away from your "barter buddy." JRK5892 laid out the offer & I'd say from the looks of his bike - it would be top quality. Recommend you give him a call...good luck!
