i'm ready to pull the trigger on a danny gray short hop xl seat for my 2010 wideglide. now the question is, do i customize it with gel or just get the standard seat. to add gel to the drivers portion adds $100 to the cost $356 to $456. having never had a "gel"ed seat...is it worth the cost?. Was hoping people out there cut provide some input....
I have a two up seat for my Sportster that is supposed to be a gel seat (feels like it is) and it is FAR more comfortable than my stock seat...of course, that's not saying much.
I have a gel seat on my V-Strom. In the summer I have to fasten a cover of some type over the seat if it is going to be in the sun for a few minutes. Sun heated gel stays hot for a long time. In the winter, cold gel stays cold for a long time. The gel seat is gonna go.
Exactly what I have seen. I do not have a gel seat, but the guys in our group seem to love the feel and HATE the heat retention. We have had guys stop a whole group of bikes so they could get a shirt or jacket out of their bags to sit on because the gel was burning their butts after sitting out in the direct sunlight. Sorry, thats all I know about gel seats.
Gel seat = swamp *** when the temps get up......had a Saddleman seat with the gel, it was a little more comfortable but in the end...you can get a better seat from C&C or Corbin that will support you better without the gel insert.
appreciate the input, not sure if the "gel" they use is the same as what others report . here is what danny gray says in thier FAQ:
"At Danny Gray, we use a state of the art alternative to gel. The "gel" we use is actually a viscolastic dry polymer. This stable solid is not a liquid so it will not leak; get as hot in the sun, freeze, or ruin the seat cover like other gels will. Our gel distributes the weight of the rider evenly over the surface of the seat to relieve stress points. The gel forms to your body reducing pressure points and increasing blood flow to help prevent "numb butt" syndrome. "
I'm of the opinion that if the seat is designed properly it will not need gel. Danny grey gel sounds better than traditional gel, but, I still would go no gel.
