I don't remember everything they do but they fill up an 8.5x11 piece of paper with crap they do. I know the fluids, check spokes, adjust clutch, check wheel barrings, etc. I never fully wanted to spend the bucks for it, but I wanted no question if something happened and needed to be fixed during warranty. Now that the warranty almost gone, I planned on doing the services myself.

I try to buy a manual for every vehicle I buy. I'm kinda interested to know what they check/adjust to justify the cash outlay. I've never taken a bike to a dealer for maintenace.
KBFXDLI, I more wanted to reply to your signature.....thanks for remembering us veterans, and thanks for the help!

10, 20, 30, do this.....???...
Your owners manual outlines all service required at each service interval. You should read it some time.

Be sure to buy both service and parts manuals.

I know of the chart in which you speak, and I have read the owners manual. What I meant was if the service manual broke it down in a step by step; first change the fluids and here's how, then adjust the clutch and here's how, now do this, here's how, and do that.

Anyway, I purchased the download version and will print it out as needed...

Thanks.

Going by my owners manual (2010 FXDC), the motor oil and filter are changed at 15k but the primary and trans fluids aren't until 20K. Everything else is check/adjust. I know there are several videos on youtube about adjusting your clutch and might be some on there about about adjusting your drive belt. Check with your buddies and ask if they will give you a hand. I wouldn't pay the dealer to do the service.

Start searching on here in the DIY threads for clutch adjustment.

If you are really, really broke you can use Shell Rotella 15w40 in the engine and primary for $11/gallon and Rotella 85w140 gear oil in the trans for $4
and a Napa or Wix filter that will fit for $5.

I am a fan of the Mobil 1 15W50 from Walmart also, but Mobil 1 does not recommend the gear lube in the tranny (damage to yellow metals). I use the 15W50 in all three holes. There is a small amount of Moly in it that concerns folks with clutch operation but it is the same amount as in the old HD Primary Oil. I have been unable to get my clutch to slip.

An 09 service manual should work fine for a '11, right? Nothing drastic changed from what I can tell.

Buy the manuals (service and parts) for your year motorcycle. There may be numerous but subtle differences that you will not know about until you need to do something. So many people buy a different year manual and then report back to this Forum that "it doesn't apply to my bike." No kidding.
