I was just wondering if somebody could tell me what year they started putting the six speeds in the dynas. I'd like to know what year they switched to five speeds from four too. I'm possibly looking for one, and I want to know how far back I can go.
2006 for Dyna's when harley saw that the tranny's did blow up, they put them in the rest of the bikes in 2007. But the 2006 dyna's had the 88" but had all the same internals of the 2007 96" engines, they reused the crank shaft they had left over. Hence why you see bore kits for the 99-05 bikes don't fit the 06 dyna's 88" motor. So if you pick up an 06 dyna like i did be worry free about the cam tensioner and other stuff has already been upgraded, but the Inner primary bearing is another story in itself lol.
As for the 5 speed, some Evos ran 4 speeds up until 86 I believe so you have to be careful. I know the Evo was introduced in 84 and I don't believe the Shovel ever had a 5 speed stock from the factory on any model, but I could be wrong.
For example, in 1984 my Uncle bought an FXSB which was the Lowrider of the day. It is an 80" Shovel with a 4 speed kick and electric start. Someone could take advantage and just advertise that it's a 1340, most people would assume that would mean Evo and 5 speed. You have to do your research.
