2007 Street Bob. 6600 miles. All stock mechanically. First thought my battery had low cranking amps. Had that tested and battery is fine. Holds a charge and tested at 431 cca. Showed this vid to Stealership parts guy and some monkey behind the service counter. Parts guy said it could be the starter clutch. Service monkey said i should bring it in to check it out. First opening is in late May. (of course)
Anyone ever have this type of thing happen? Battery connections, plug connections, etc are all clean and solid.
Possibly a dirty air filter? still running the original.
Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
is it making a grinding noise. or just turning slowly. turning slowly it is proabbly the battery. if it makes conking noises its the starter. and if it free spins then it is the starter. your best bet is to not replace it with a hd one. replace it with a nice high compresion engine starter. your bike will start fast every time and it will last forever.
Battery I'd say by the sounds of it. Most of the startgin voltage is going into spinning the motor over and not enough oomph to make a decent spark - typical of battey failure in a big engined bike. Of course the battery could just be worn out or it could be that the alternator isn't fully charging it, or something else is causing a high resistance in the starter circuit. Doesn't sound like the starter clutch to me.
Had Battery tested at a local Staab battery shop. Voltage was fine, and tested at 431 cold cranking amps. Battery tech said battery is fine. He put it on a "carbon tester" or some such thing. Would that be considered being load tested?
Any recommendations on a better than OEM starter?
Thanks for the input so far guys.
Don't kow how they check batteries over there in the 'States but here we do a Discharge test from fully charged. Usually shows up any defects in the batteries efficiency.
My starter in my low rider sounded just like that, swaped batteries with same results. Put in an aftermarket starter, twin power or something like that and problem solved. The stock HD starters suck.
First off, if the battery did not have enough voltage it would not start at all, HD has a system to prevent starting if the battery voltage drops below 12v.
Sounds like you have an ECM issue. There are settings in the ECM that provide fuel for starting, not sure exactly how it works, learning more about it as I read about and tune the Thundermax.
The ECM will provide additional fuel for starts, it can be adjusted on the Tmax, not sure about the stock ECM, it may have to be replaced.
You said stock mechanically, but do you have a tuner of any kind, or had the Stage 1 download?
What was done to the bike just before this starting? Have you checked the ECM connectors?
