Looking for some diagnostics here. I have an 06 street bob with about 26k on it. It has run pretty well fine since I got it around 23k and had the stator/rotor replaced. So I was riding along yesterday and when I hotroded the throttle a bit in 2nd gear the engine seems to miss every few fires, feels like the spark being cut when the rev limiter is hit but the bike will keep on accelerating, just with a hitch in its giddy up. I rev it hard in all other gears but it only occurs in 2nd, and only when I give a good twist. If I'm just cruising along in second, not on it hard, it will run right on up through the rpm's, no issues.
Possible causes include a sit in the rain Saturday morning for a few hours till I could get it under cover.
I have not reseated the plug wires to ensure proper contact yet, but will soon as I have a chance. Its just bothering me sitting here and had to see if anyone might have some other insights. Also can't quite figure what would be causing the issue in only 2nd gear, but I'm not real experienced with these things, yet, so fire away.
So can you guess at what rpm this starts happening....? If your just above idle rpm, then the stumble is because you are loading up the engine at too low an rpm and it can't handle it. My bike will do the same thing if I romp the throttle below 2000rpm...It eventually catches up but it takes a couple of seconds.
Other than that, I don't have a clue.
It doesn't seem to be real consistent when the stutter starts, some times a little lower in the rpm's but mostly well into mid range, so I'm pretty sure the gear isn't overloaded/underreved. I took it up to the rev limiter in another gear for a comparison, and this stutter in 2nd is much more pronounced than the effect of the limiter.
I think you may have answered your own question when you mentioned rain. Moisture can raise hell with spark. Dry coil and spark plug connections and use some of the special grease for plug wires on all connections. I'd also check for a plug that is missing under load..
If anyone is interested, the problem was not electrical, it was related to the recall on 2006 transmissions. What can I say, I'm a newb (but learning, by golly) and really didn't want that to be the issue.
Anyway, the shift cam came loose from the shifter assembly which apparently allowed the 1st/2nd dog ring to wear into the shift fork, allowing the dog ring to slip out of the countershaft 2nd gear and to progressively get worse over time. Which explained all the exhibited symptoms.
