Default Engine build questionns

Hey guys it's been a while.. I've got a 2004 fxd with a stock engine and I wanna fix that. Im not looking to set any speed records but would like to wake her up alittle bit if you know what I mean. Times are tough and I dont wanna break the bank so can anyone suggest an afordable ugrade? Its not fuel injected and shes all stock. I know it aint cheap just looking for the best bang for my buck.

I did an entire stage 1 for around $600. That included a Power Commander 3, Arlen Ness Big Sucker stage 1 and Bub 7 2-1 exhaust for my FI bike.

What really helped keep the cost down was Dennis Kirk's sale on the Bubs for only $192 to my door. They had that offer twice within about 6 months last year. I still can't believe how lucky I was to learn about that offer on this forum!

On the other hand, the stage 1 really didn't do that much to wake up the bike. A cam change is really needed to have a seat-of-the-pants improvement. I went quite a bit further to make my bike go, but now we're talking about breaking the bank.

How much are you willing to spend?

Well ... you're obviously not going to need the EFI 'upgrade' ... you might post a thread on the 'tech forum' for "Engine / Fuel / Intake / Exhaust" to get some ideas on what carb jets are recommended for your setup ....

I think the standard advice of swapping out to a free flowing air cleaner will serve you well and I think one of your bigger issues will be whether to stick with the slip-on setup you have or go with a full exhaust ... for most street applications, a 2-into-1 system or one that mimics the stock system with a 'crossover' between the headpipes will be best for good torque and responsiveness ....

How many miles are on your clock ...? If over about 35,000 it might be a good idea to have a look at the cam chain tensioner shoes and maybe replace them .... Which brings up the question of whether to just go with stock replacements or swap out to a hydraulic tensioner system or gear drive cams ....

If you're looking to conserve funds, I'd recommend just replacing the stock spring-loaded shoes and maybe upgrade to S&S 510 cams or Andrews TW26 .... both pretty good street cams that will give you a nice performance boost and affordable ....

Good luck and let us know what you decide ....
