Default Glass mirror removal

I recently purchased a complete set of mirrors that I wanted to paint myself for my 09 streetbob.

I know one of the better ways is to remove the mirror assembly with the stem from the handle bars.

However, since I bought an extra pair I wanted to paint them first to see how they would look. So my question is the following:

How do you remove the mirror holder from the mirror stem (rod)? I am assuming the ball from the rod was inserted through the front of the mirror and into the socket. I think in order to remove the glass mirror from the holder I would need to heat it up first.

Has anyone done this before? Remove the glass to separate the stem from the mirror holder?

I did some searches here and it seems that's one way to do it. Heating up the mirror holder to loosen up the adhesive inside.

Thanks a lot for your help. I am new at this type of things and I am sure it's evident by this post.

A heat gun will soften the adhesives enough to pry the mirror out but you still won't be able to remove the mirror housing from the mounting stem. The mounting stem is held in place by a metal plate that is stamped into place. Assuming you can remove the plate without buggering it up too bad, it won't go back together without drilling some holes and tapping them out for mounting screws...fun stuff. If you just want to paint them it's gonna be easier to get them adjusted to the position you want them and then just tape off the mirrors and rattle-can them to death.
