Default Mirror woes...

I have a 03 1200 Sport. The mirrors really suck as they are, but I still rely on them during city driving. My left mirror is very loose on the ball. It's tight on the handlebars, but it pivots very loosely on the ball, if that makes sense?

When I accelerate, hit a bump, or look directly at it, it moves. All over the place. Under hard acceleration, it points to the sky. It's really annoying as I am very tired of continually adjusting it. There are no screws on the back of the mirror that I can see for tightening it.

Is there any way to tighten the mirror itself on the ball, or am I going to have to replace it? The right side mirror is fine.

Thanks.

Can you try to crimp it on the ball? That would definately drive me nuts.
I have mirror issues too. I use mine for driving also and it seems hard to see anything. I wonder if you can see better if they're mounted below the bars and how hard it is to get used to it.

I smeared some clear silicone caulking on the ball and swiveled the mirror around to get the residue worked in under mount, then positioned it where I liked and let it dry. Worked great for me, and I can still adjust it since the rubber residue is just enough to gum up the ball to keep it from moving on it's own. Other option would to get new mirrors that have the tension screw on the back of the mirror.

Those mirrors are a pressure fit. If they get out of whack there really is no permanent fix for it except replacement.

I flipped the stock mirrors like a lot of others on here. I found that I could see a lot better that way since I wasn't looking at my shoulder anymore. They don't seem to vibrate as bad that way either for some reason, not to mention they look better.

I had the same problem with my uncle's 03 xlh 1200 sporty. Drove it to socal from San Francisco and it kept vibrating out of place. I positioned it where i wanted it and used gorilla glue to hold it in place. doesn't move at all. Painted the mirrors flat black. looks and works pretty good so far.

Thanks for the responses. I will probably try putting some silicone on the ball and get it in place. If that doesn't work, loc-tite will be my next venture.

Default Loose Mirrors a factory defect

I took the mirror out of mine using boiling water and a screwdriver and found that one of the 3 rivets for the ball tension was not properly completed and popped out. I am going to harley with it to see if I can get replaced. I don't know if they will, but it's worth a try.

You can try and fix it yourself, but be careful to pry the mirror out gently; the more heat the better, and boiling water for about a minute works great.

I used Blue Loctite. I just smeared it into the ball and let it sit for a day. Its hasn't moved in six months.
