Default Fuel Range

Hi, Gang.
Picked up my Brand New '11 Fat Bob Friday and just topped off the tank (up to the little black thingy just under the gas cap as per dealer's directions). I clicked around on the display button for the range when the tank is full (it did recalculate) and it is only saying I have a range of 160 miles!!! If the tank is 5 gallons and the bike gets 40-50 MPG, then .....Hmmmm.... let me put on my math hat..... Ok..... shouldn't it read something like r200-250 miles? What gives?

Welcome to the innacuracies of a Harley. The guages are never correct. Run a tank through and see what you get on your trip meter...it's the only way to tell. You def won't get 40-50 mpg tho...

Do like Widerglider says. I've got to disagree with him on the mpg, though. I've got an '07 Street Bob, stage 1 with Doherty Machine Powerpacc intake, V&H slipons, and TTS tuning and I get about 45 mpg commuting to work, and 50 on long rides, and I don't take it easy on the throttle.

Forget the gadgets.

Keep a record of your fill-ups and mileage; average them, over time, to get an accurate fuel consumption figure. Use your resettable trip odometer to figure range. Mine averages 45mpg.

Mine always says 160 miles at fill-up too. Actual range depends a lot on how I ride. On a steady ride with friends the range is up around 180, on a couple of weeks of short commutes its down around 150.

I just set the trip and fill up at 120 miles.

My 08 doesn't have the fuel range thingy but it does have a 5 gal tank and two trip meters.

Even though it has a 5 gal tank I usually only use 3.5 to 4 gals at a time.

The fuel light comes on 160-165 miles into each fill up. I've never put more than 4 gallons in it.
So I figure... 160 miles from 4 gallons of gas = 40 mpg (40 mpg times 5 gals = 200 miles).

On my annual Labor Day week end ride I top off the tank on the way out of town & reset both trip meters A & B. I reset A with each fill up to double check the fuel light (it's never lied). I also stuff each gas receipt in to my pocket.
I leave trip meter B alone till I get back home & fill up again. I add up all the gallons I used & divide it into the total miles ridden.
Over the last three years I've averaged 48.7 miles per gallon on my annual Deal's Gap/Smoky Mnts ride.

The remaining indicator is how many miles remaining before you should start thinking about getting gas, I believe. It appears to always leave 1 gallon left in the tank at 0 remaining miles. Thats your reserve.

Exactly. Sort of dumb if you ask me... When it says 0 miles left you should be outta gas, not have a gallon left to guess with!
