Thanks for the info Sidecar. I will have to check the slide and see if it has been drilled and I will also check the needle. I think both are stock. I will also try a smaller pilot jet. As far as I know the needle is stock, but shimmed.
Thanks Sidecar. I am going to pull it apart this weekend. I have modified and rejetted a lot of bikes, but this is the only one where it looks like stock jetting is too rich when opening it up. Anytime I have ever piped a bike and opened up the intake I have always fattened up the pilot, needle, and mains.
The slide and the spring are stock. The slide hole is 1/8" I am ordering a 45 and a 44 pilot and will post my results in a week or so when I get them. What are others running for jetting on their 88" carbed models with pipes and intake done?
Here's my take on this. johnny5jz's bike is set up the same as mine. Mine runs just like his, great. The hard starting is really not a problem. It's caused by the bike cooling off just enough to require a little more fuel on restart. The fact that it runs fine otherwise is an indication of this. Going to smaller jets isn't going to help an already lean warm restart.
Just give it a little bit of enrichner on a warm restart. Don't screw with a bike thats running correctly!!!!!!!!!!!
I did pull my plugs today and they are quite black. The tips are good color, but the inner part of the plugs are pretty black. I am going to just give the 45 pilot a shot as soon as it comes in. Can't hurt for $4.
Sidecar, my slide has not been drilled, it looks stock. It may be a little smaller than 1/8" but there are no drill markings. Sorry i did not measure it, just inspected it. The throttle response on the bike is awesome just the hot start issue. I have ordered new jets and will give them a shot. My spring and slide though are stock and unmolested.
Just one other thing Sidecar. Right now I am jetted per your number 1 exactly. Still seems rich though. I will give your number 2 a shot. It will take a week or so to get parts since the Harley shop is out of stock on the main, needle, and a 44 pilot.
