Default Aching back on long rides

I have an '07 FXDL with a Mustang two-piece vintage seat. It is essentially the same seat I had on my previous bike and for the most part is very comfortable. When out on a longer ride (30 or more miles), though, I get a pain in the right edge of my back (the rear portion of my right side). It's not unbearable but uncomfortable.

Since I did not have this pain with the seat on my old bike, I am wondering what the cause may be. My arms are relatively short (33"), but I feel fairly comfortable with the stock handlebars. Could it be something as simple as gripping the throttle too tight or would pullback risers or something else possibly solve this problem?

Man, could be a lot of things, but for ME my lower back problems went away when I moved the bars to a stance that helped maintain my posture.

My back was sore after long trips till i got a mustang seat with drivers backrest. The backrest alone made the ride more comfortable. For more local rides i take the backrest out.

Do you carry your wallet in your back pocket? If so, try without it.

I made my own backrest...you could probably do that with the 2 piece seat.

Mini apes will sit you up a bit and straighten out your back. Worked like a charm for my buddy on his softail

Oddly enough i had the same mustang seat model on 2 different bikes, first was a 99 1200S and the second was an 07 FXDB like yours. I suffered from back pains on the 1200S. NOT on the FXDB. The difference was i sprung for the back rest. If you sit in a chair all day that is supported, I.E. an office chair, you just cant sit on a bar stool with 80 mph winds long, your just not used to it. At least that was my experience.

What kind of controls do you have? I used to get all sorts of uncomfortable on my Street Bob, to include my back, until I put forward controls on it. I think being more stretched out helped.

Checkout Ultimate Ice Wraps.com. Their back product is made for low back inflammation on and off the open road. Take the ice sheet out when you just want support. I use mine all the time. No chemicals all Natural goodies. Very simple idea, but very effective. Use code shipme to get free shipping. Hope this helps. Ride On!
