After weeks of checking out all the great air cleaners on the bikes in this forum, finally decided to go back to the style I had on my old FXR - the classic teardrop. Ordered and rec'd the S&S #17-0450. Install was pretty straight-forward, although you have to do some thinking on your part as the instructions were not that clear in every aspect of the install process, and the pics included looked like they were taken with a cell phone (small and very low resolution).
All parts are included, but you do have to reuse one of your OEM A/C gaskets. Parts appear to be well constructed and of good fit, and the filter mounting plate is solidly anchored to the heads and the TBI unit. The filter itself is a washable cotton gauze sandwiched in between mesh screens, and S&S carries replacements of same if ever needed.
I wanted the cover to keep within the theme of the bike, so I scuffed up the chrome, applied primer, then some gloss black and some textured black for contrast. I left the cover screws as is for some added contrast. I'm happy with the results.
Seat-of-the-pants impressions: throttle response seems to be just a bit snappier at almost the same level as when I changed to the open header pipes and Rush muffs a few months ago; have yet to do a WOT run. I'm hoping the ECM and the XIEDs will make the necessary adjustments; if not, looks like I'll be shopping for a tuner. Thanks for looking.
