im sure he didnt want to hear all of your BS opinions....
search the forum and youll get what your looking for.
And I'm sure he wants the opinion of someone with an 07 Street Bob belted... Hi, I have worked and owned bikes for a LONG time now and let me tell you my friend, the belt was such a revolution! My first belt experience with on a 1987 FXLR, not only was it smooth it lasted almost 100,000 miles... NO CHAIN in existance can do a 10th of that not to mention all the parts involved for fitment and the cost, dude, be prepared for even more sticker shock. Search all you like but if you're just looking to "Be Different" buy a BMW!:P
The only reason I would suggest changing your belt drive to a chain is for purpose of changing your over all gearing. Most do it to increase low end performance, look at every metric race bike sold today and you will see a chain. And chains are not as big of a pain in the *** to up keep like everyone else is saying. If you do more than wipe your bike down before your once a week trip on it than you should be fine. It becomes a regular thing to check every 300-500 miles (clean and lube) But to change it just for looks or to be different in my opinion would be a waste of time and money. But hey always remember its your bike and your free to do with it as you please.
My question is: How often to we have to maintain the belts? How reliable are they? Well there are cases where belt have prematurely worn out but that's not nearly as often as chains. The bikes that have been compared on here are high performance bikes and dirt bikes... honestly, how many dirt bikes have over 20,000 miles on them and the same chain? Race bikes I'm willing to bet don't stay with the same chains for very long because that is a lot of force and stress from each run or moto... but like Bo says, hey it's your bike.
Let me just say this as well "Have fun doing the research for all the right gearing and set up, I'm sure there's an aftermarket company out there putting it together but I'm willing to bet they haven't been in business all that long.":-)
I was thinking about going from belt drive to chain drive on my 11 wideglide. only reason i want to is because i think it would be different...so i was wondering if anyone knows of a good kit to do this or at least point me in the right direction...thanks
Told you motorbike riders have strong opinions about chains. If you want it, get it. I heard the same song when I did mine. I have never really paid much attention to opinions though but hey I'm the guy that likes carbs over FI (I have both) too. The link to the other forum should have what you need to get it done. Sort of sounds like a couple of these bikers might sell belts huh. Good Luck
Nope, mine all ship shape! Admittedly my wife has a brand new Iron and I have 44k on the Bob and no where near ready for a new one... I'll get back to you in about 56k more miles. Deal?:-)
