I want to install a set of V&H staggered Short Shots on an 09 FXD. How bad will the bike run without a fuelpak and a high flow air filter? Will a K&N high performance air filter replacement suffice? I've been reading about this stuff but I'm dumb as a box of hammers. It's kind of an economic thing, too; not working....
Thanks
if it was me, i would do pipes ,a/c, and tuner all at the same time or you could do pipes, a/c, stage 1 download ( i don't have any idea how much the download costs)
or you could buy the parts as you get the money and then install all at the same time
HD told me that I could change pipes and not change the aircleaner and not have to remap the bike. So you can do it but I don't think you will like it much if you do it that way.
Id hate to try it my bike runs hot stock and I burn my right leg every other day. I m going to do the pipes and EFI at once and then save up for an air cleaner after that . I like the stock bike (love it actually) but I want the pipes louder and the motor cooler so I understand the need for a change. I know it can be frustrating when money is tight. Good luck. If it were me id save my pennies and do it all at once.
=HD told me that I could change pipes and not change the aircleaner and not have to remap the bike.= At least this is true! You will have the sound you want without changing the amount of power your bike has stock, when you open the air flow and add fuel management you will then feel a power boost, like 6 or 7 extra ponies. Once you have those you won't ever want to go back!!
The HD download is not a bad thing, but cost you 100 or 1.5 hund. to get so you may as well put that towards your fuel management, and the V&H fuel pak is not recommended by many, so go with power commander, thundermax , or something like that. Give fuel moto a call and see what they reccomend, they'l likely cut you a deal as well! CHEERS!
i put rush slip ons on my 2011 fat bob , i needed the 2.25" baffles as Ive got a cat in the header , for pre cat models( 2010-down) they recommend 1.75" baffles , you don't need to do any other mods ( a/c or PC ) , my bike runs pretty good as it is , so I'm not changing anything else for a while ,
whatever pipes you choose , just make sure they have baffles in , if you can get a recommended baffle size for your bike like rush do , go with that size and the bike should run fine , if its a bit ruff , and looses mid range , get a tighter baffle , this will increase the back pressure and help the bike perform as it should , apparently all 07 and up Harley's us a different EFI system that should adjust the petrol enough to cope with most exhaust changes and even some A/C changes as well ,
good luck , V&H are a little harsh though , get some ear plugs .
