I doubt if it's stainless steel, I've not had stainless rust on me. It's probably cad plated, just replace it.

Here are some pics. I did clean it yesterday with WD-40 and a wire brush. It does look better today but it's still rusty on the sides and bottom and if it rusted once it most likely will again.

It's the bolt right below the number stamp, right behind the shift linkage. Does anybody know what this bolt is for and if it is short enough to get out being behind the primary?

go to the auto parts store and buy some royal jelly and clean the bolt up with a tooth brush. I have used this stuff all over my bike. just be sure to wipe it clean with a rag when done and wash it off with soap and water since it is corrosive. It works great on rust removal and does not seem to weaken the metal any. Ive used this stuff on sissy bar bolts etc . if a bolt gets wet enough or is in humidity long enough it will rust.

LOL... I know, right? But I guess I just picture a stream or rust over time flowing down my black engine block, and then a mechanic (or me) not being able to get the bolt out because the head has eroded away. I'm also curious as to why this is the only bolt that is rusting, and why it's even there... I can't figure out what it is bolting together.

that bolt is probally a few inches long, holding the shift drum inside of the trans..if you pull it out,you will be pulling the trans to reassemble it..just wire brush it if it bothers you that much..brush some black paint or grease on it to protect it..the cad plating probally got chipped when it was built..it wont rust out or cause any problem..a chrome cap will cover it too

That sounds like a good idea to me, thanks.
