I need your opinion on replacing IPB on my 06 Street Bob. I have around 34000 miles on it and haven't had any issues with it. The only reason I'm thinking about replacing it is my mid control shifter rod is stripped and has to be replaced. I've always changed all of my fluids every 3000. It was suggested by the dealer in Jackson Tn. to change the bearing while they were in there. I sure would be pissed if I have it done and then start experiencing the problems some of you have had. Just thought I'd throw that out there for someone.
I would have said no until I read the rest of your post. Since you're that far into it you might as well.
For the record I have never bought into the dowel pin argument on why these bearings failed. If changing the case halfs fixes the problem then I think it was more that one or both of the surfaces were not true when machined in the first place.
My bearing failed after 9600 miles. It was replaced with the stock bearing and now has 24,700 miles and is as quiet as new.
I'd do it. The expense of replacing the IPB is the gasket, fluid, and time. You're doing those 3 already...the IPB is a 50 dollar part....put the Baker in there while it's apart.
