Here's what I found in this Instruction Sheet:

12 Vdc (RED) lead: To speedometer power post located inside fuel tank console.

Ground (BLACK) lead: To speedometer ground post located inside fuel tank console.

Signal (YELLOW) lead: To coil primary terminal (which has Blue or Pink wire attached)

Here are the links to the respective 2003 wiring diagrams:

Which Mini-Tach do you have? Is it an H-D 2-5/8" Mini-Tach? If so, it doesn't connect to the coil signal wire, it connects to the VSS /Serial Data Link wire. The same wire that goes to the speedometer. If your previous tach was a conventional tach, that could be the problem.

The old tach was the stock one

Are the wires hooked up correctly inside the tach housing? if the orange and black wires are reversed, the tach will still light up, but of course it won't work. Don't ask me how I know that.

That's the problem. The Mini-Tach DOES NOT connect to the stock tach signal (Pink wire) coming from the ignition module. You need to connect the Pink Mini-Tach signal wire to the White/Green wire that goes into Pin 2 of the speedometer connector.

I looked at the wiring diagram and I see what wire you are talking about, what is the best way to slpice into that wire should I just cut it and splice my tach signal wire into than solder it or is there a better way Thanks for your help

From what I'm reading in the Mini-Tach instructions and service manual right now, the Pink wire from the ignition module should be working for you. Are you sure the wires inside the Mini-Tach housing are connected correctly?
