Quick follow-up. Went for a 100 mile ride last Saturday and bike ran fine until the last 5 or 10 miles. Made it home and then decided to ride it into my indy and have him take a look, only it wouldn't start. Tried on and off for over the course of about 30 mins. Got it to start a couple of times, but it would die out immediately.
Pushed it into the garage and put it on the tender. On Monday, it started right up and I rode it 7.9 miles to the indy, unfortunately his shop was 8.9 miles. I called him and he came right over with a scooter and a heavy rope and towed me about 1/4 miles to the crest of the hill, untied the rope and gave me a push and I coasted the last 3/4 right to his garage door.
Turns out the problem was a leak in the vacuum line on the petcock. He removed the original petcock and replaced it with a gravity flow Pingel petcock and the bikes been running great.
I'm wondering if now with the new petcock I will be able to use most of the 4.9 gallons in the tank? I rode 60 miles today, but since I will be away next week, will have to wait until the following week to find out.
Question. My Low Rider (1996) has pretty much the exact same tank. Its rated at 4.09 gallons. Its the Wide Glides that have the larger tank. I hit reserve at exactly 3.5 gallons and can get right just over 4.1 gallons in it when empty. At least when I painted the tank thats what I was able to get in it. Are you sure your FXDL tank is 4.9 and not 4.1?
Its my understanding that all Low Riders had the same basic tank from 1996 to 2005.

Now that it is fixed, when are we going for a ride? If you are going to be out of town next week I will take good care of her and let you know how she does.....
According to the owners manual, the tank holds a total of 4.9 gallons, and the reserve is 1.1 gallons.
