I have searched the forums a lot scanning for an answer to my problem while I worked on it myself when I had the chance at home.
05 FXDXI, my Tach and Speedo do not work. Just stopped one day, and for a few weeks, would come back on for a few days, then stop working again, and so on. Have had nothing the last few weeks.
I did the basics, checked the fuses, ran along the wires and checked to make sure they are getting power. I have not took apart either guage to see whats going on inside, no clue how to even begin that.
Anyone had a similar problem with the guages or electrical problem like this? Also, could someone point me in the direction of a parts diagram or how to take apart the guages.
Thanks,
When you say you get nothing, do you mean they are completely dead... no lights, no indication? Not an expert but if both gages are acting the same way your problem probably is not in the gages. I'd look for something common to both. If you are getting lights but no indication maybe the problem is in the speed sensor or something related. Just guessing. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will jump in.

I am getting nothing, no lights or indication, no power to them at all. That is the same conclusion I came to, especially since they each have separate power running to them. I am afraid I might have to trace the lines all the way down, and find where something is going wrong.
You might want to check the the plug connections closest to the guages. Start the bike and 'jiggly' the connector, if the off/on condition occures you might want to remove the femal pins from the connector. There should be a small detent portion on the pin that needs bent in a little in order to make better contact with the male pins.
I found this to be the problem on the indication lights on a 96 XL.
Messed around a little bit last night, I could not get the plug that contains all the dash components unplugged. This has orange on the inside of it, and two clips on the side. This thing would not budge. Is there a secret to this plug?

Thanks,
You need to post some pics to help describe what you're talking about.
I can't image how you're observing orange on the inside of it (the plug?) if you can't unplug... the plug?
Did you pull the fuse out for the instruments, clean it and spray some contact clener in the fuse holder. The 02's have a 12 pin plug to the the speedo/tach/and instrument lights. This plug could be under the seat or gas tank. Find it and check your ground wire (black wire) from the instruments, make sure the grounds are connected. My service manual shows a orange wire as power, meter it out to verfy and check to see if you have power. I realize I'm using an 02 as a guide, but there shouldn't be much different.
