Default disconnecting fuel gauge wires.

i wanna get rid of the stock fuel gauge on my 08 street bob. its off by a good 40 miles, and i just use trip meter anyway.
went to pull it off last night and couldn't figure out how to unhook the wires from the back of the gauge. there were two long thin screws that i removed but they didn't seem to do anything. could not separate the cap from the guts. i'd rather not just cut the wires or remove my tank if its feasible. rather just unhook from gauge and leave stuffed in the hole.
anyone have advice?

as a bonus question, assuming i can get the wires undone, anyone know of a set of matching super simple (cheap) caps? i didn't check the diameter, but i was thinking worst case scenario i just get an extra stock gas cap, wrap it with tape till the diameter matches the fuel gauge hole and smash it in. (cause that how we do it at Rus' coast customs).

thanks.

Replacing the guage isn't going to correct the float level in the tank.
As for the removing the wires from the plug I use a small paper clip or a pin the information is in the service manual.
As for matching gas caps, Harley sells stick on gas cap medalions. No need to remove the gauge just stick it over the gauge.

how about 2 matching gas cap covers?
Just cover the existing gauge and be done with it...

Being the gauge is electrical not mechancial (which I am sure you know) don't you need to cap the wires before just placing a dummy cap on there? I am thinking of doing this as well being the gauge is worthless and IMO looks cheap. OWuld like to just use a dummy cap and use my tripometer and range calculator cause thats what I do anyway. Thanks

skip,
do you use the paper clip inside the gauge itself, or in the deutsch connector under the tank (then pull the wires all the way out through the top? i haven't gotten a copy of the service manual yet. if at all possible, id like to just leave them inside the hole incase i decide to sell the bike, i can just reconnect the thing.

wg2011,
yeah, you'd need to cap them. i'd CAREFULLY, since its near gas fumes, use heat shrink tube, then wrap that in a layer of electrical tape as well.

You could very easily remove the front tank bolt, loosen the rear tank bolt and (while pulling up the front of the tank) place a small block of wood between the frame & tank.
Unplug the connector at the bottom of the tank, dis-assemble the connector & pull the wires up through the tank.
Put the fuel guage with the wires attached in a small box, up on a shelf in the garage.

if I've got to i will, but I've got a tank lift on it, which makes raising it up a pain in the ***, due to how stretched all the component cables and **** are. delicate balance surrounding my tank right now.

Rider wants to remove gauge.AI advises to jumper
the yellow and black wire on a 05 Road King, otherwise
the fuel sender will send a fault code to the ecm
Jumping the 2 wires will make the ecm think the tank is full.

Raising the front of the tank was just for clearance to reach the plug at the bottom of the tank... between the tank & frame. I guess you wouldn't need to raise the tank any higher.

To make a jumper/dummy plug (for the connector) all you would need is a couple 72990-01 pins.
Solder a short length of wire to each pin.
Re-assemble the fuel guage connector plug (which was dis-assembled for guage removal) by pushing one pin into plug position #2 and the other pin into plug position #4.

Connect the assembled jumper plug onto the fuel guage wiring harness connector.

This will jump the yellow/white wire to ground which will send a 'full' signal to the ECM.
