Default Laced wheels questions

How often do they need adjusting? Mrs Grind's front wheel is out of whack - straight, but out of round. She called the dealer and was told they need to adjusted every 5-600 miles, and it's not something covered by warranty (she's at 1200 miles). They charge 2 hrs for truing laced wheels. Truing wheels is not something I'm comfortable with. Are we looking at $150 for truing every month, or is our dealer full of bs?

I believe you are to check for tightness of spokes every 500-600 miles. Wheels out of round at 1200 miles is a bunch of crap. WARRANTY!!!!! Go over the dealers head if you have to........

I didn't realize they had to be tightened that often. I believe there is a special socket and they all have a required torque setting.

Does anybody has more info on the tool and a link or additional info for the DIY?

The H-D shop manual for your bike explains all of this including how to lace and true the wheels

I don't know. I've got a buddy with a 1999 Sportster Custom, 21,000 miles, 21" laced front wheel, and to my knowledge, he's NEVER had them checked, tightened, trued, etc., and his wheel is fine. If yours are out of whack at 1200 miles, that sounds like a warranty issue to me.

There can be some initial adjusting when new, but I have 30k+ on my alloy rims and I get them put into the truing stand every time I put new tires on...no broken or really loose spokes, but they needed a slight tune-up last tire change.

Ok this is out of my 2011 dyna owners manual:
Tighten at 1k service and again at the 5k service, then every 15k. Don't know where you people got every 600 miles

I've got 7500 on my WG, been feeling a bit funny when accelerating out of a courner. Thought it was the tire getting squared off but I quess I better check the spokes or have the dealer do it. Does anyone know if they do it on the bike or do I need to take the wheel off and take it to them?
