I'm not unhappy with the current apes I have, just that they're so wide where they meet the fork. Something about the look from the front I don't like. It might be the crash bars or something.
I think it's because the bottom of your existing ape's are wider than your triple trees. I had the same issue but mine was a narrow glide so I ordered and installed a wide glide conversion kit and now the trees and ape's line up nicely.

Also I kinda like the crash bar, only for long trips. Where's you get that one?

I personally prefer the old-school design of your current bars, as Harleys are old-school looking themselves. For far less money and efforts, you could change the "proportions" of the front end look if that's what's bothering you by relocating the turn signals to just above the lower tree, and throwing on a smaller more streamlined set of mirrors (perhaps round?). Visually, that would take away from the top-heavy look of the bike (your thoughts) and in a sense bulk up the lower end around the narrow glide fork tubes. I like the look of your bike right now, and if you just have to spend money right now in this poor economy, I'd be looking at other areas. The current handlebars look killer...and you can see that you already have interest from other forum members who wish to purchase them from you. Good luck in your decision. And chrome against black is timeless too!

If you blacked out your trees, lowers then I'd say go with black bars otherwise chrome. For the record, turtle wax chrome polish works awesome especially if you have some rust starting to build up.

As the bike sits right now, I'd say chrome would go best.

I usually as a rule go by what color the front end is. Since you have chrome,go with chrome. Unless you plan on blackening your front end in the very near future, then go with black.
