Default Ignition Relay

Anyone else here had or having problems with the ignition relay in the fuse box of their Dyna? Just tryin to figure if there is a problem with the relay or an issue with the fuse panel itself? Already had mine replaced once, and yesterday the bike died and i opened the box and flicked it, and she fired back up, just to die again about 2 miles later! so i pulled it and put it back in and got her home, when i pulled it, the relay was noticeably hot. And both times this issue has surfaced has been when its wet outside, any input or solutions to this would be greatly helpful, thanks.

Symtoms of problem, bike will die goin down the road....and another is... Engine will crank fine but you will get no power to the fuel pump which results in no fuel and kills the coil as well!

I accidentally pulled my relay half out while installing my Power Commander 5. I thought I put it back into place properly but it wouldn't fire up. The Indy I bought the stage one from came over while test riding another bike. I live about two miles from his shop. Anyway, he reset it and fired it right up. No charge for the house call=great Indy.

Moral of the story: your relay may not be set in place right. It may be a problem with the connector, not the relay.

Use some dielectric grease.
I changed both my relays this year. My bike died on me running down the road.
Two days it would die and restart. Since I changed them with new from Drag specialties and used the dielectric grease riding in the rain, no problems.
I could of gone and used the warranty but I need my bike.
I have new spares also.

One of the relays has 5 prongs and the other has 4. The one that has 4 had originally 5 but one was cut off. Wierd for a new bike. I thought it was broken off in the box.
Oh well the new ones from Drag specialties have the proper 4 and 5 prongs not chopped to fit?

I had one fail on a night train, my local Indie recommends all his customers carry a spare system relay.

Just my opinion but like the brake light switches, you see this too often with people having problems. Get you an extra one since it's plug and play. That way you will know it's that for sure. Bet in your neck of the woods corrosion is a big problem. Would not surprise me that the relay silver is very thin and a little corrosion is all it takes. Just like the auto makers, they have cut cost to the point were little things is all it take to kill everything from working.

Just had mine replaced. The bike was cranking way too much before firing, engine light was on and bike cut out once from idle.

Yeah, the HD dealership also said that they are seein alot of issues with these relays goin bad, more so on the Dyna's than any other model, so ill just grease them up, and keep a couple extras in my pocket since this seems like its gonna be a cronic issue here

Dirty connections cause high resistance, which in turn creates heat. clean up those connections tighten the slipons and apply some corrosion preventative, dielectric grese has been mentioned or go to WEST MARINE and see what they would recommend.
