How many out there experience popping on deceleration (while in gear)?
Just put on new slip-ons, and have the SE air cleaner & stage 1 & download. I definitely get popping, but I'm not sure it is out of the ordinary (much harder to hear it clearly on the stock pipes).
I will probably dyno the bike in the next few weeks, but wanted to get a feel if this is common?
I get a little bit from time to time...usually in the lower gears. I don't worry too much about it. My last motorcycle was much worse, and it never broke. So I don't worry about it with this one.
You're going to need a tuning tool to dyno.
PCIII or SERT are most popular for Dyno tuning, but you could use a DFO/TFO or FuelPak
yup.. but I figure I'll just do a dyno first and see what kind of mixture I have with the stage 1 download. If I am satisfied, I'll leave it at that (want to make sure it isn't running way too lean or way too rich). But if there's a problem, I'll buy the SERT. I like the fact nothing is left behind, although it does **** me off that you're essentially buying a "tool" that theoretically the shop should have (e.g. the ability to download a new map).
My bike does it too. I have the vance and hines pipes, a hypercharger, and had the SERT down while on the dyno. If i leave the throttle cracked just a hair it almost never does it. The guy that did my tuning said he can probably get rid of it if i right down what gear and speed my bike is at when it pops, but it's not really a consistant thing. I dont really want to jack with the flashing, the bike runs perfect, and the mixture is perfect and the gas milege is the same as stock.
The Cobra company has an alternative to remapping your fuel injection. It is a plug in unit that has three adjustment screws (idle, mid and high rpm) and requires no computer downloads. I had one of these units on my old Vulcan Nomad and it worked like a charm. It totally eliminated backfiring on decel. You simply use the adjustment screws to enrich the fuel incrementally until your bike stops popping on decel. It is seat of the pants tuning but it worked very well for me. You can always pay for a dyno if you want to tweak it for maximum HP. It also gives you the ability to adjust as you change air intakes, mufflers, pipes, etc. and gets the dealer out of your pocket for future remaps. I planned to put one on my street bob but it was only recently that they came out with a closed loop unit that includes the plugs for the O2 sensors (I didn't want to jeopardize the manufacturer's warranty). I have one ordered and it should be in a week or two. I'll do a post in a few weeks and let you know how it works out.
Popping on decel usually comes from too lean a condition. I use the Dobeck Performance computer. Dobeck (Techlusion) was the first to market these simple 3-screw FI computers and I've used them on several bikes now without a problem. I've talked with quite a few people who did the Stage1 download from Harley and still had the decel pop problem. This is the problem with downloadable maps from a remote computer, it gives you no control over the actual mixture. The Dobeck, SE, and Cobra computers allow you to do that, which is why I think they're far superior to the ones that use downloadable maps to achieve proper fuel mixture.
