Question Softail Ghostbrackets on Dyna?

Hey,

I'm really enjoying my new 2011 Superglide Custom. I've done the Stage 1 with V&H Bigshots, 11" Progressive shocks, Kuryakyn pegs, and will soon tackle the new bars and risers. Here's my question, I have a set of Ghostbrackets left over from my old Softail, and I just bought some throwover bags for Biketoberfest. The throwovers are a pain to fit, and those rear signals are too damn big to let the bags tuck in. I was gonna replace the rear signals with smaller ones anyway, when I remembered I had these Ghostbrackets. The ones made for the Dyna require moving the signals out, which I really didn't want to do. The Softail ones would use the front Dyna mounting bolt, but I would have to drill my own rear bolt hole. Has anyone done this? It looks like I could just drill through the chrome rail cover and bolt the keeper through that, instead of going through the sissybar support and the fender. I'm thinking I measure for the rear keeper, pull the chrome rail cover off, drill and mount the rear keeper, and replace the rail and proceed as normal. This way I could keep a set of slim rear signals in their normal mount and still use the bags, right? What am I missing, or do I really need to drill everything out to get the hole all the way through the fender? Or maybe I'm just being cheap and should buy the Dyna version..... but I really don't want signals on my license plate!

That's an interesting idea. I have heard of guys drilling all the way through the chrome strut cover, frame strut, and fender, but never just the chrome cover. I would be a little leary about hanging a saddlebag from a thin piece of metal like that but it might work. Is there enough room inbetween the chrome cover and the frame strut at the pont you would need to drill the hole for the bolt head?

+1 I definitely wouldn't do that at all.

The chrome covers would not support the weight of a loaded bag. As others have recommended, bolt all the way through the fender. Good luck.
