Default Still sputtering

06 Wide Glide
Previous owner installed:
PCIII
Stage 1
V&H Big Radius 2-2

It had 14,000 on it when I bought it, it now has 22,000 miles.

Over the last 3 months/4000 miles, my bike has had an intermittent sputtering issue when it is at operating temp (never does it cold). It kind feels like it is running out of gas or cutting out, and I notice it most at 60+ MPH, but it does do it a lower speeds and across all RPM ranges. When it sputters, if I give it some throttle it will pull out of it and run fine, but as soon as I go back to cruising it will begin to sputter again. The frustrating thing is that it doesn't always do it.

It has never died, and it is not kicking any codes. It did kick a code when the PCIII got wet, but I cleared that almost 1000 miles ago, and no codes have come back.

I have checked all electrical connections multiple times, they are good. The PCIII connections are not wet (I have had that problem too). I had a hole in the tube between the filter and the pump, so I replaced the filter, pump and the line down to the quick connect on the bottom of the tank. This seemed like it did the trick, but it has been acting up again the last couple of days, and now it will sputter even when the tank is full. Like I said, the problem comes and goes, so its hard to tell if what I do is actually making a difference or not.

I have never experienced this, but I would check a few simple things first. Is the battery good, and are the cables tight. How do your plugs look? Last I have read about a leaky fuel line on the fuel pump inside of the gas tank. They say taht when the tank is low on fuel you can hear the gas spraying on the inside which means the internal line is leaking and needs to be replaced. If after checking these things and all checks out ok I would look to the PCIII and I would also check the ignition coils. Hope this is of some help.....Good Luck.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks while warmed up/acting up?

Yes, but I'll try again. It doesn't really do it at idle, or when its not under load. Do you have any tips or common areas to look for vacuum leaks? I agree this problem does seem like it could be a vacuum leak.

Look for intake leaks by spraying carb or throttle body cleaner at the flanges where the intake meets the cylinders. The motor should be hot and avoid spraying into the air filter. A leak will show up as an obvious change in the idle. I know you said it doesn't sputter at idle but it might have to be under load for that to occur.

I wanted to update this just in case some else who is experiencing this issue comes across this thread.

Turns out the problem I was having is due to a loose/bad connection in the wiring/connector to the rear injector. The bike finally quit on me about 100 miles from home, but fortunately I was able to lift the rear of the tank enough to access the injector wire. I wiggled it a bit, and was able to get home.

I stopped at a dealer on my way home, and the service writer told me this is a common problem on the 06 and 07 Dyna. He didn't have the part, but gave me a part number for the connector. 72110-06. He told me just to replace this connector and about three inches of the wiring. He also told me to add a little wire so that there would be a little more slack between the zip tie on the frame and the injector connector/plug. I'll be doing this today. I'm glad it happened this weekend and not next when I'll be leaving for a 1500 mile trip.

Is it "throwing you any codes? My '06 FXDi did the same thing! Sputter, Pop, Irratic idle, and no codes. DROVE ME CRAZY! Took it to my mech. several times. He couldn't pin it down 'till I pulled in one day when it was really showing itself. It was the Throttle Position Sensor. Put another one on, no troubles now. Just me, just sayin. Could be worth looking into. Hope this helps out

Best wishes.... Tim

Glad to know you found the problem. If it is a common problem in those years ya gotta wonder why HD hasn't issued a recall/service bulletin/notification to owner/something like that....

Default Dyna sputter problem

Bump to keep this alive. I get an intermittent sputter, - kind of like when it is time to clean an old carb - on my 07. No engine light - no code. It generally happens when it gets warm (the engine, not the outside temp). The occasional sput when maintaining speed is just annoying. This is quite unsettling when accelerating through a curve, or from a stop. Goosing the throttle helps, but the power is not there when needed. Idles just fine. Seafoam treatment with a plug and wire change helped a little (can do no harm) but it does not have my confidence. Local dealer is backed up on work, and I'm not going to pay for their guessing and part swapping, if I can do it for cost.
