My 20 year-old in the Air Force has been saving for a street bike. To him, Harleys were for old people..."it's a generational thing, dad." He came home for the holiday and rode my Dyna Wide Glide. It was his first time on a Harley and now he's hooked. We're going to visit the dealer tomorrow to check out some sportsters and see what they can do for him with the down payment cash he'saved. I'm stoked!
First thank your son for us! Bless him and his service!
Isn't it funny how 20 somthin's think HDs are old dude bikes, until they ride one. There was a GSXR rider at my previous job. He was 22 and out of college, had his first engineering job and was also a pilot and instructor sine age 15.
So I let him ride my bike. Most everyone couldn't believe I let someone else ride my Harley, it was a big ordeal to all that were around. But where else would be get the chance?
But he came back with Kool Aid on his ear lobes from his smile. He said it was nothing like he expected or heard. Now he is working toward his own
I know it aint real hip to say this coming from a BT owner....but has he thought about the v-rods? I know there are a lot of sportster guys out there who will disagree, but it is fairly common for someone to buy a sportster for the performance (and $ savings), only to realize sooner than later that the bike is great fun, but not quite the best for longer trips and/or commuting...or any other number of reasons people upgrade from sportsters to something else.
It's obvious that he's into the whole performance thing if he was considering a rocket...HD released those v-rods for potential customers just like him. They are looking to get young guys who are thinking about sport bikes to try a cruiser with real performance capabilities. Sure, the sportsters are fun and quick...but the v-rods are true performance machines on par with the japanese bikes. Sure, they won't take the turns like a crotch rocket...but they'll certainly hang in a straight line..and they're harleys.
I could make the same argument for buells, but no matter what, to me those are still crotch rockets....made by HD. I don't see the v-rods that way. And quite honestly...if I had an extra 15-20 grand laying around, I would get one myself.
Just figured I'd share my take on it. I can only speak from experience...I've had quite a few bikes since I started riding 7 years ago...if I could do it over again, I would've just spent my money on the downpayment for the harley right from the get go...in the end, I would've saved a lot of money...money I could've used now to get that v-rod as a second bike.
Either way, glad to hear we got another youngster.
Yep, my 21 year old has talked about a metric for a lot of years. Took him for a ride today as i do now and then. When we got back he said when he does it has to be a Harley. No bike sounds that great other than a Harley! My 23 year old is saving for a black Bob, already has the okay from the mrs to be, she loves to ride as much as he does. Will they ever put enough money together?? Who knows but at least their heads are in the right direction on their own.
