I have a 2006 Dyna Super Glide, I am new to riding, my first bike was a 2003 1200xlc. I let the dealer do all the work I was afraid to touch the bike. I would like to start working on my own bikes. Is it a big project to change the outer primary cover. It does not appear to be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am somewhat mechanical. I have worked on my own cars.
Thanks
I put on a chrome primary cover on my Super Glide with no problems. If you can turn a wrench, you can replace the outer primary easily. The shift lever and foot peg have to be removed first. Just a couple bolts to loosen. Then loosen all the fasteners on the primary. When installing the new outer primary, make sure you follow the bolt tightening sequence in the instructions. Also be sure to drain the primary oil and have a new gasket on hand.
If you are goin to be doin some wrenchin yourself best invest in an in/lb and ft/lb torque wrenches. You will need both sooner or later. Also, get a set of torx head sockets. You will need a #27 torx socket to install the derby cover. A #25 will not work, I tried.
for definite get yourself a copy of the service manual also.
theyre on ebay at good price from lake shore HD.
it will give you all the torque values, and tips such as which sequence to tighten in etc so that you do not warp anything.
I actually replaced those torx derby cover screws with five hex fasteners. Much better and easier to take off now. Darn near stripped two of those torx screws so I replaced them.
