Default S.E.R.T questions??

so dealer is going to install sert on my street bob. stage 1 air filter and i have indy 2 into 1 outlaw pipe.

they said I do not need to tune it on the dyno. They will use a downloaded map for stage 1 that will be fine for my bike.

so what the heck... why dont i just do stage 1 reflash then. whats the point of getting sert. I am not going to tear into my motor. I just dont want it to run lean.

am i missing something. I thought I needed sert to tune my bike.

If i can use a canned map from the dealer. then there is no point for sert for me?

And really wondering, when i get sert installed. do i need dyno time. the dealer said there is no need with a full exhaust and air cleaner to spend as much as 500 bucks for a full tune. The downloaded map would work just fine with my set up.

said once i save up to tear into the motor with cams and stuff then pay the money for a full tune.

I said i was worried about it running lean and they stated the downloaded map will work just fine.

What you all think?

From what I've seen there are two SE tuners. The street performance(41000008B, shows for $250 in the online catalog) and the race tuner. The street performance lets you swap through a bunch of premade maps, essentially what he is talking about. So while it costs more than a Stage 1 it lets you keep changing in the future for more upgrades like a cam or big bore kit.

The race is the dyno required one that enables the fine tuning, starts you with a custom map, and I believe the newer ones have the ride and tune function and software available. Like 350 in parts, then + dyno time.

At least that's what I've gotten from reading up on it myself around here.

Edit: I would imagine with all the functionality of the SERT you could set it up with a canned map, seems like you are underusing the equipment then when you could save 100 on the street performance one if you are ever only going to run canned maps. I know a few dealerships simply flash the 103 stage 1 on the 96"s, mine told me they feel they run better that way and I would think that prevents a lean condition.

The sert has the option and availability to install pre-made (Canned Maps) based on different set ups, Pipe types, Displacements..etc etc...

You can get away with just a canned map with a stage one, but will most likely see better results with a custom (dyno tuned) program (can do this using the Sert at a later time if you need).

No experience my self but I have read about people using something called Xieds (do a search) as another option to the HD tuners (Cheaper I believe).

I have the Sert myself and honestly think it's overkill for someone never going past stage 1 but it's one of those things you may end up using/needing.

Also if you get a Custom tune with the sert get your tuner to make you a copy of the Tune File as you can't retrieve it from the ecm (unless you have the TTS Mastertune upgrade)...

Plenty of info on the forums here about it, just relax, take your time and have fun.

Good luck with your Scoot

If the operator of the Dyno is good at what he does, he can make your bike purr. A canned tune (program download) is just that (generic), and it does not bring the bike's motor into itself.

Although, if the person doing the tuning on the Dyno is not proficient, then you are better off with the download.

The stage-1 canned map (i.e. non-SERT/SEPST) is now useless and redundant. Dealers here won't even install them any more. Since about 2007/08 when the new Delphi EFIs were fitted, the EFI can make as much adjustment as that canned map. Its also a lean and underpowered map, with the bike still meeting EPA restrictions.

The SEPST, however, is another kettle of fish completely. Because its specified as 'FOR RACE ONLY', the EPA issue goes out the window and the canned maps it comes with are really good. The timing is more advanced and the AFRs are set for performance, between 12.5 and 13.5:1 in open loop.

The only changes it needs are some tweaks to the closed loop bias tables to cool the engine and generally improve closed loop running and then some Smartune sessions to bed the thing in. I had some dyno time after I finished the mods and we were struggling to find anything to tweak, most people could easily live with it as is.

I bought the Race tuner for 4 reasons when I did research,
1. Does not have to be MOUNTED on the bike at all times (unlike the aftermarket units)
2. Harley Dealer downloaded tune will straighten out the fuel mixture.
3. Have the option and complete customization ability on the dyno
4. Being able to run diagnostics and pull trouble codes from the bike without having to go to the dealer.

Hello All,

I have a HD re-map for stage I now and it works but, some of my Buds have Thundermax W/ autotune. Big bucks!... but, from what I've seen (and heard) that's the way to go. It's a clever little gadget that will answer All your concerns. I plan on getting one myself real soon. Look into it. Just sayin...

Best Wishes...Tim(HT)
