Every page in your owners and/or service manual states (at least 3 times):
void your warranty and/or
cause death or serious injury.
Really the joke was, I hit 50 in first.

Autozone sold my KN filter to me for $32.00..............
With the proper mods I beleive the KN filter will help you get more performance from your bike..............with the proper mods.

Yer best bet is to go to the K&N website. E-mail tech support if you have to.
I put one on last year. My son accidently stepped on it when he came out to see what Daddy was doing. I called tech support and they sent me a brand new filter cartridge, ready to install for nuttin!!! Now thats service. I spent $125 last year for the whole kit and kaboodle bakeplate, horn and everything, and man it was worth it!!
E-mail me and when I get home I will get the kit # I retrofitted to my sled. ('06 FXDBI)
