I have a German style non-DOT "novelty" that I wear full time here in FL, and a full face DOT that I was handed down when I first started to ride earlier this year. I really don't care for the big helmet in Hot Florida summers, I may wear it when the cold morings kick in over the next couple months.

I have issues finding helmets that actually fit and feel comfortable and look good. The Non-DOT's actually feel like they cover my entire head, as opposed to DOT helmets that feel like a block of styrene bead foam sitting on the top of my head, and give me a "mushroom head" look that I absolutely hate. I have been told that I may need to find 3XL sizes to fit, but the 2XL germna is actually a near perfect fit. The full face feels like I am squeezing my head into it when I put it on, I believe it's a 2XL, but it's pretty uncomfortable and gives me a bobble head because it feels heavy as hell.

I have heard that the DOT spec's for Helmet laws are 40 years old, and don't spec current materials or design or construction. I don't like the idea of riding without any protection, but I think a non-DOT will protect me just as much in a accident as the 1 1/2" block of foam and 1/8 of gel coat and polyester will at 50 mph.

No pedastal here. Just wish ppl would grow up and be resposnable about the helmet issue.. Lots of idiots have died in what would have been a minor accident and left behind loved ones and a big expensive bill and mess for everyone else to deal with.. All to look cool, be badass or whatever.. Typical FTW irresponsible b.s... Ppl that make that choice should carry about 15k on them when riding, so at least when they go down they can at least pay for some of the mess left behind.. Cmone its a helmet thread, opinions are going to get thrown on.

I have a skull crush but only wear it on short trips when I don't leave 3rd gear. It definitely doesn't provide much protection and there is severe buffeting over 45. Looks good though.

QUOTE=dondee;8957105]So, nobody's rockin' a Skull Crush? I'm intrigued by them and would love to hear a report.

Unrelated "helmet decoration" story: last Sunday I'm leaving a good BBQ joint in the north GA mountains and I took off with my novelty flat black skid lid still hanging from my highway peg by the strap. Guess I'm too used to riding without one when in FL. Anyway by the time I stopped the top of it was pretty ****-beat from dragging on the asphalt. I actually like it that way-I'm gonna slap a big band-aid on it and wear it like that.[/QUOTE]

My mom use to try the guilt trip routine on me, it never really worked either. Go preach somewhere else. If you don't like what someone else does, TFB, grow up and worry about yourself, we have all heard this crap before and yet we still want to be free to make our own choice as to how we live and ride.

Now to the OP's question....
I have several, from novelty to FF, on road trips I pack the FF in case of rain and cold weather, makes it possible to enjoy the ride when no helmet or a novelty just sucks.

It is a choice to or not to wear a helmet, I always do. I watched my best friend die on a dirt bike collision with two trees way back in 73. I was holding the helmet that he said he didn't need to wear for the short ride he was taking.

Looking at blood coming from his eyes, ears, nose and mouth, has stayed with me all these years, and I don't want to have anyone see me in a like condition because of a decision I made. Wear, don't wear, in Texas, it's up to the adult rider...

I have I think, seven helmets, half helmet style to FF modular. Also an MX style for off road riding...

Common misconceptions. Research SNELL and DOT. Foam and composite shells make a HUGE difference hence all sanctioned racing. Most accidents happen near home, falling sideways off the bike can kill and if you get thrown and skid down the street, FF helmets are awesome. Not many hit brick wall straight-on at 50mph...

Tons of them do in NorCal. Most I ride with do. Club members do too.

That is as pointless as arguing against seatbelts because they cause internal injuries.

There's no uniform on a bike, wear wtf you want. Just realize you asked for opinions and mine is that you'll look like queer eye for the bike ride with your color matched helmet.
So a black bike with a lime green helmet is okay?

Stock speakers and radio/iPod/CD it's not an issue whatsoever. Now at 75mph in a pack with earplugs, it's a struggle to hear it.
