quick release bars can it be done?
There is already a quick disconnect on the harness that feeds the controls. They are molex connectors. Only downside is they do not fit through the cut-out in the trees and if the wires are run through that cut-out, you'll have to disassemble to connector to extract the wiring through the trees.
So, with your plan every time you buy bars you'd have to buy new controls and have them pre-wired for that truly quick change aspect. That can be very costly.

I believe this can be done and at first glance many of you think so too. Just is it feasible and worth it? I don't know yet until we see how much this will ultimately cost.
Harvey s. Firestone once said something to the effect of:
"If all objections must first be resolved, NOTHING would ever be accomplished"
Anyone else see a value for this?
Not that I don't think it's a good idea but....
you'd also have to take into account cable lengths. If you had different style (heights; bends) of bars you want to change out, then you may very well have a lot of extra throttle/clutch/brake hanging off your ride.
Personally, I just don't see how a quick change setup could be accomplished at a fair price.
To swap out a clutch cable, you need to remove the clutch cover which also means draining the trans fluid because you'll lose quite a bit if the bike is level (on a jack/lift/table).
Throttle cables are easy enough to change out.
If you ran the wiring externally then you might have a chance at a quick-change setup but then it'd look like crap IMO.
My dad has always taught me "the impossible can be done. The difficult takes a little longer". I do believe that but in this scenario I just don't see it as a viable option....or someone would have come up with it already.
Furthermore, I might add to enable a truly quick change handlebar setup, one might want to lighten the amount of connections on the bars. Move hand clutch to foot clutch...foot braking...signals on trees...and the list goes on.

On a serious note, you bring up some good points, but if I understand his request, it is to swap between black and chrome, not so much different bar styles or sizes.

right now, i have it set up for 12.5" chubby apes with SS cables. If I go to 8-10" z-bars, my cables should still work right? Well close enough maybe. Not ever going back to a suicide clutch...did that in the 60's...looks cool going down the road but the gals my age can't see that far anymore, anyhow...lol
No, definitely no foot clutch.
If I do this, I want it all to remain the same or close aesthetically including internal wiring. I could go with black cables instead of SS as the change out will be to black. Ideally, I can just use my existing cables. So now maybe $200 for cables (if i change them out back to black) and wires, $2-300 for bars. Used controls? I don't know. Electrical plugs and connections...?
Maybe total system, tops $1k if I don't buy ready-made...getting up there but still like the idea. I have quite a bit to digest, what am I forgetting?
Dont forget about the brakes... If your going to be using 2 different master cylinders, your going to be doing a lot of bleeding. Maybe a power bleeder or those valved bleeders would be the ticket. This brake fluid is not good on paint, so doing a lot of bleeding your more likely to get some of that **** somewhere...
But yeah i remeber joe working on a system to quick detach, dont remember the outcome however

Guys, thank you much for contributing to my question and quest. I'm finding that I'm checking this dyna forum almost everyday now. That's because guys like you take the time to contribute. Great info and networking!
So, you want to swap the same style bars back and forth between black and chrome?
Here's what ya do: Buy some chrome bars and set them up / install them. When you feel the need to go black, wrap them with some black vinyl tape. Hey, it's an idea.

if your wires arnt wired through your bars,it isn't that hard to swap them.just loosen the controls, slide them off, take the bar clamps of and swap bars..it sure isn't quick release..you could have the bars prewired, but you would still have to swap cables and the mastercylinder back and forth. the wire connections are usually under the fuel tank.so you will be taking the tank off each time..
