HELP! my little newhew wiped off some dust on my 06' vivid black paint- now i have surface scrathces in the clear coat..... I so wanted to go off on him but at 12 yr.s old (can't kill or hurt him) so how do I polish the clear coat?
Heres the best and safest way that I know of and it will remove swirls and light scratches. And you can buy both at Walmart pretty cheap. First, get a tuble of Maguiers Scratch X remover and then in that same automotive section with the waxes and stuff get a cheap orbital polisher/buffer. I bought the small Coleman buffer and it works just fine. It was very cheap, "under $15 I think". Make sure and get an orbital and NOT a rotary buffer. With an orbital you will not burn a spot in you paint job. Its very safe to use ,..... you could even let that lil 12 year old monster buff it with no chance of a problem. Also get a couple of microfiber buffing pads to go on the buffer, and your then all set. I'm not crazy about using the Wool pad that comes with the buffer, but the microfiber pads are great. And if my memory is correct you can get the Scratch X, Coleman Buffer, and Micro fiber pads all for under $25.00. And all of this is at your local Wally World.
The only way I know of to remove the scratches is to pull the tank off and strip it of emblems. Clean the surface with wax remover and then sand the clear coat down to the paint level.
Now the scratches should be removed at this point.
Then spray it with two clear coats of catalyized clear. This really requires you to have the skills to paint however, so perhaps it may be better for you to take it to a paint shop.
The above description is what I would do if mine were scratched, but maybe another member has a better solution........pg
Oh yeah,..... One other thing if my other suggestion dont remove it completely, "which I think it will just for dust scratches". Go to your local automotive paint shop supplier, and ask the rep for some of the PPG scratch remover. I cant remember the exact name that PPG calls it but its good stuff and I know several body shops guys who use it, but just use it sparingly but try the Meguiers first. You shouldnt have to reclear coat it over just those types of scratches.
1 -Get yourself some 3M MicroFinish Glaze. You can apply and rub this by hand. You may have to go over it a few times, but this should bring the scratches out.
2 -Once that is done, was the area with soap and water and let dry
3- Then take a good wax and apply as normal.
If the scatches are somewhat deeper, which would be caused more by a ring or a watch, you then may have to get a buffing wheel and pad to get down deeper.
Good luck
