2011 Superglide ....2 issues please

The dealer changed the initial oil and filter on the 1000 mile service.

Now it's time for me to do it.

I can't budge the oil filter!!
Bought one of these

and it just won't budge..
Since I put some torque on the filter wrench cap, now it just spins and won't grab.
There are no other wrench options available here.

Crappy part is I live 700 miles below the border at San Diego and basically I am stuck, plus I punched a small hole in the filter by trying to pry off the stuck wrench cap. Double crap!!

I need some drastic measures to get the filter off.
Punching holes to get some turning angle.....insert screwdriver and turn?

Ideas please.

Yes - try hammering a screwdriver through both sides of it (in one side and out the other) and use it as a handle to turn it. Be careful not to contact your engine during insertion or turning.

yes you can do the screwdriver method theres just not alot of room there. sometimes i have to use a BIG pair of channel locks and kinda get a bite on the end of the filter and get it broke loose that way. remember righty-tighty lefty-loosey. good luck!!!!

Get a oil filter strap wrench I had the same issue on my old bike and the strap wrench with some pressure removed it with ease.

Besides the screwdriver thing there are a few other things I can think of. There’s another type of adapter, has adjustable claws, works pretty well. You could also try a rubber strap. When I did my first change on the Limited I went with the K&N filter that has the nut apparatus on the end, don’t need a filter wrench to take it off just a 17mm wrench (I think that was the size).

When you put the new filter on don't over tighten and make sure you put some oil on the new gasket. What's the right amount to tighten the filter? You will get some different opinions here. On my last change I got it to where the gasket just started to touch and then roughly a half turn more. It seemed like I was over tightening a little bit, however... The first change from the local Indy they did their hand tight thing and one day I noticed it was leaking and not even hand tight, the rest is history. Personally, I would rather have it just a "little" over tight then start to leak on me somewhere. BL, every setup is different so you will need to see what works best for you.

Good luck

I use the "screwdriver through the filter" method every time I change mine. Easy, cheap, and helps me direct where alot of the oil goes.

Get one of these at an auto store. I can give you the size if interested. 7 bucks. Mine was stuck... worked like a charm.

Speaking as an ex-tech, I would highly recommend this tool:

Much better purchase than straps or chains in my experience.
