Default Wondering ...

Riding home yesterday, as I pulled up, I noticed the clutch wasn't disengaging ... was able to roll up and get it in neutral in my parking spot ....

After I got off, I realized the clutch pull had about half slack ... I had the clutch apart recently and the clutch looked okay ... also, the ball and ramp and everything on the other side looked okay ....

I'm wondering whether the clutch cable is fraying or about to go ... and if that is what caused it to slacken ...?

Any thoughts or anyone experienced this ...?

THX ...!

Did you check/adjust the cable adjuster on the left down tube?

That's where you should start...

I just have a hard time believing that would be it ... the cable adjuster hasn't moved once in the six years and 45,000 miles I've owned the bike ...

... the thought had occurred to me ... just didn't seem plausible ...

I've got the manual ... just haven't checked the troubleshooting section yet ... or looked at the cable adjustment / replacement section yet ... (crappy weather out and just feeling lazy for the time being ...)

THX ...

Check the locknut on the adjuster screw in the primary as well.

I'm sorry ... guess I wasn't clear ...

I replaced the inner clutch hub on the clutch basket about 2,500 miles ago ... I did the work after a H-D service department had botched up the job ... when I fixed their work, I did all the clutch adjustment personally--set the clutch adjustment and locked it down ....

Over the previous 42,000 miles, I had never had the issue arise once ... I am certain the torque on the adjuster on the clutch hub itself and the 'inline' clutch cable adjuster are both at least as 'solid' as they ever were ... that's why the issue is so puzzling to me ....

I will be going into the primary and checking the adjuster nut ... and then taking a look at the 'in line' clutch cable adjuster nuts, as well ... just not sure how to check under the sheathing to detect fraying or breakage of the clutch cable itself ....

Highly unlikely it is frayed enough to do what you described and still be intact. Clutch cables will stretch over time, but not rapidly like that after 40k. I suspect something was not aligned properly and snapped into place.
Start with the basics, check the adjuster then the ends of the cable and where it is connected. If you don't find it there, open the primary and check that out.

agreed with above. they either snap or work (not much play on clutch cables) i would start with a basic clutch adjustmetn and go from there... have you ever lubed your cables? unrelated but still if you are adjusting the calbe may as well
