The "recall" wasn't a true recall. It was a 50,000 mile / 5 year "silent' warranty HD offered all of us that had 99 bikes at the time. It's long gone.
Your bike is an Excellent candidate for gear drive cams in the you have the strong hot forged crank AND the Timken Lefty bearing which Harley made "optional" in 2003.
( Thanks Harley)
Once they're in you forget about them as far as maintenace goes. My bike hits 100,000 miles by next week and my gear drives have been in there for 20,000 of those miles. Love 'em.
drove the bike today- great sound, great shifting, very happy with it, and i pick it up next saturday- has an alarm too! the paint shows a lot of metal flake in the sun-
Unfortunately last month my 2001 FXD was totalled when a dumba$$ decided to turn left in front of me, causing me to skid, lay down the bike, and proceed to slide into the side of his car. Anyway, I was lucky and walked away. So now I'm looking for a replacement. I have found a 2006 FXDCI in the color I like with less than 1400 miles - Asking price is about 10k, forward controls, sissy bar. Original owner knows nothing of the bearing problem, never heard of it. I am set on getting a blue bike, and this i probably the nicest I've found. Is it worth getting with the potential problems? I don't care much about the 6 speed or fuel injection.
Thanks-

Like you say, NADA is a bit lower (5,400 ish). That could be a barganing chip but the true value is what folks are willing to pay. Prices go up this time of year and this one will most likely go for the price he's asking. If your satisfied with the ride for the cost...
