Default is it me?

I have an 07 bob black denim with black thunderheaders on it and I started to notice in the middle of the pipe just to the right of the heat shield what looks like specks of rust. I don't know if this is what it is or it's just somehting that shows up on black pipes. I do notice it has a slight bluish color to it like heat marks from the pipe itself. Any advice is appreciated. Is this normal and if not how do I get rid of it. I'm more concerned for performance and durability than looks. I like the bike to look like it is....being ridden. I'm not a show bike kind of guy, but I don't want the pipes to be ruined.

Is the black finish on the Thunderheader a ceramic coating?

yeah, black ceramic coating. It's only in the one spot. I do keep the bike outside but it's always covered at night and I always keep up on the cleaning. I don't know if that might be a factor being outside but I mean it's a F***** motorcycle not an infant made to ride and use you know what I mean.

I've got an RB Racing 2-1 with the black ceramic coating. I don't know if you can see it in my sig picture but near red "RB Racing" tag, there is a weird discoloration. It's kind of a pearlescent blueish color. It's not bad and it just looks like the bike gets RIDDEN. I haven't noticed any rust but I should check more carefully. Does that discoloration sound like what you have?

Also, is the rust at a weld or a slip joint?

yeah that's pretty much it but I did notice a small rust spot at a weld spot underneath but there is a small cluster of those specks I talked about.

Maybe someone here can help with some good advice on how to treat and stop that rust from spreading????

My discolored area happened basically all at once. I had washed the bike, dried it off and was riding it around the block to cook out and blow out any water from those impossible to reach places. When I got back to the house, some water was dripping from the battery box area. I grabbed the chamois (still damp) and it draped over the tail end of the exhaust giving a nice sizzle. I pulled it away QUICK but noticed the discoloration. I had just washed it and that discoloration was not there. I think it was the sudden quenching of a hot exhaust.

I didn't cry over it because it looks like this would happen if you got caught in the rain after the exhaust was up to temp. Don't know if that helps, but maybe we can slow down any further changes by avoiding situations like that when washing the bike. I try to avoid riding in the rain but in Florida that is impossible certain times of the year. So I won't dodge the rain JUST to keep my exhaust looking purty.

I'll be checking my welds under my heat shields for rust too.

noticed you have an '07....I have and '06, and about this time last year I was upset about my first rust spot, ding, and water spot........now my bike has many. This is not due to neglect, but riding, and I have began to look at them as war wounds and evidence that I RIDE! Your bike is gettin it's character.
You're going to ride in the rain many times and hit rocks and debris just as in a car....all part of it. Love it.

I had a set of X pipes in flat black on my Softail and every 6 months or so I had to re paint the flat black with high temp BBQ Grill paint. It works pretty well. The big thing that makes the black rust is the oils from your skin. Fingerpints and crap like that will burn into the black and start to rust it. I don't know why, I'm not a sciencetist, just a guy whoo has been there. Just like when you put new chrme pipes on a bike. If you dont clean them really well befor you run it for the first time you get the black spots burnt in. Good luck with it tho.
